When to call an emergency plumber

3/16/2018

Think a little before you call your plumber – is it a real emergency?
Plumbing companies usually offer 24/7 services to their customers so that assistance is available whenever there is urgency. However, it is often seen that people mistook a minor problem as an emergency and hit the panic button. Calling your local plumber is always recommended, but a little thinking beforehand helps you to understand if it is a true emergency.

Also, in certain situations, you might not have your local plumber around and you need to take care of the situation, until your plumber arrives. A little patience and planning might help in preventing a disastrous situation and can help in tackling a difficult condition as well. For instance, if there is a major pipe burst and you fear flooding, locating the shutoff valve can help in reducing the problem. Understanding the difference between a true emergency and the one which does not need immediate attention helps in getting things done in a convenient way.
At times, when you notice a plumbing problem in the middle of the night, there is always an urge to call the emergency plumber for repair. At times, it is necessary to seek immediate help but in several cases, it is seen that the problem can actually wait till business hours start. You can actually save money by calling your provider during business hours, as we all know that emergency charges are usually high.
How will you decide?

How do you understand that the problem you are presently facing can wait or you need to call your plumber immediately? You need to actually find answers to a few related questions, which can help you decide.
  • Try to understand if you need to use the affected system or part of the system right away. For instance, if there is a water leakage in the basement and it is flooding with great speed, you perhaps cannot wait for business hours. You need to call your plumber immediately.
  • If the problem is about a broken toilet or sink, you probably can wait for a few hours, because you will not be using it during the night.
  • If it is winter and you are facing problems of frozen pipes, you definitely need to call your plumber right away. You will need water and it is definitely an emergency.
  • Overflowing toilets can be dirty and unhygienic, especially if you have pets, elders or children at home. It is always good to get it fixed as quickly as possible.
  • If the problem is with city supplies, you do not have to worry and your local plumber might not be able to help as well. You do not have to call emergency services.
  • If the problem is typical in nature and leaving it can further damage the system, you shouldn’t waste time and call your plumber.
  • If the leakage is minor and slow or if the water is not rushing out at great speed, you probably can wait for a couple of hours for business hours to start. Save money by calling the plumber during business hours.
